VISION TESTING

In 2024 Libraries for Literacy, in coordination with Breadline Africa, began partnering with OneSight Africa to offer free vision testing and free glasses to students at the schools where we have established libraries.
After being trained by OneSight Africa, we conducted pre-screening vision tests at the Bonga school. Pre-screening identifies those students that require more thorough eye examinations

In August 2024, OneSight Africa held a vision clinic at the Bonga school including free vision examinations by optometrists and provided free glasses to students and teachers that needed them.

In 2025 we partnered with OneSight Africa to conduct vision screening training for the Vhulakanjhani school in Malubana Village. Students were pre-screened and free vision tests were conducted for the students that required this. OneSight Africa provided free glasses to the students that needed them and the glasses were given to the students at the library opening ceremony. Vision pre-screening and testing for the remaining grades is now being conducted.

Good vision is instrumental in learning. Over 80 percent of learning is done visually, putting students with uncorrected poor vision at a major disadvantage. Good vision is the key to unleashing students’ full potential!

It is estimated that 80% of children with a learning disability have an undiagnosed vision problem.
